Reader Review
Yoga moms-to-be: This book is terrific!,
April 25, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from Sierra Madre, CA United
States
BEAUTIFUL, BOUNTIFUL, BLISSFUL is an amazing introduction
to the technology of Kundalini Yoga and meditation for
expectant women. As with her powerful first book, EIGHT
HUMAN TALENTS, Gurmukh presents practical information,
divided into sections based on the three trimesters of
pregnancy. Each section is a wealth of knowledge and
insight into the choices that pregnant women and their
loved ones face; specifically, subjects like
breastfeeding, labor, diet, exercise, the decision of
where to birth, and mothering. In the spirit of attending
one of Gurmukh's classes, the sections conclude with
perfect and powerful meditation suggestions to address
the emotional and spiritual needs of the new mother.
Gurmukh's positivity and encouraging tone throughout the
book and her use of real-life examples from her own
experiences and those of her students make this volume
very enjoyable to read and share with others. Another
terrific feature of the book is the presentation of the
information by trimester. This will make mothers feel
organized and able to "check off" many of their
concerns as they address them in a way that makes perfect
sense of the baby's development inside of them. The
simple pencil illustrations in the book are a celebration
of women's pregnant bodies, and nicely demonstrate
exercises and meditations.
This book is a delight to read, an attractive reference,
the perfect gift for expectant mothers, and a wonderful
addition to one's own library of yoga, health, pregnancy,
and parenting titles.

Excellent advice and exercise for pregnancy,
May 23, 1999
Reviewer: ahkrivanek@yahoo.com
from Seattle, WA
I highly recommend this book to women 14 weeks pregnant
and on. I actually took yoga classes with Francoise in
Cambridge, UK during my second pregnancy. The preparation
was exquisite and prepared me and baby for a glorious
childbirth experience. The book is well organized and
easy to read so that you can prepare for a natural birth
as it is meant to be. No one can predict a birth
experience, but this book helps to take the experience
into your own hands and avoid medical intervention. --This

Finally a beautiful exercise book!,
August 21, 2002
Reviewer: A reader from Fairhaven, MA USA
Over the years I have bought alot of work out books and
found them to be quite depressing. All the pictures would
remind me of a bad gym class in the seventh grade. Baby
Om far surpassed the other books I have bought in terms
of quality. The writing and photos match the state of
mind I want to acheive. So I picked this book because it
was the best looking . . . and found it was jam packed
with poses, exercises, baby messages, and lots of other
good info. Great baby shower present.

Excellent Resource!, March 11, 2003
Reviewer: Jessica Ramsey
from Bear, DE United States
I am a fitness instructor for prenatal and post partum
women and I just love this book. I debated between
several of the "mom-yoga" type books and I'm so
glad I decided on this one. The exercises are safe, easy
to follow, and wonderfully illustrated. It is even easy
to follow if you are not a "yogi". My only
criticism is that the binding does not lay flat so it's
difficult to review the exercises during your workout.
Otherwise, I recommend it for both prenatal (an entire
chapter is dedicated) and postpartum women.

Pregnancy Perfection, April 6, 2001
Reviewer: Pamela L. Duszynski from
San Francisco, CA United States
Yoga is one of the most beneficial exercises for pregnant
women. In this book Rosalind Widdowson delivers a number
of the most effective yoga poses for pregnant women. One
of the best things about the book is that it has easy to
read and follow instructions for each pose. Along with
each set of instructions, could be anywhere from two to
three pictures demonstrating the pose. Verbal and visual
learners alike will gain easy practice with this book.
Additionally, the book talks about breathing and the
importance of practicing yoga breathing for mother and
baby. Believe me, practicing from this book will make
your pregnancy more enjoyable and endurable. One of the
best things is that many mothers continue yoga after
birth because of the benefits this book outlines and
introduces. A must read for any soon to be mother!

Covers prenatal yoga and provides lots of general
info, too!, July 17, 2003
Reviewer: Vanessa
(see more about me at Amazon.com)
from Dallastown, PA United States
As a prenatal yoga instructor, I find this book to be
very user-friendly, full of photos and illustrations,
some original stuff that you won't find in every book on
yoga for pregnancy. It contains not only programs
suitable for the three trimesters, but also yogic
breathing practices, simple ways to incorporate kegels,
pelvic floor visualizations, a guided relaxation, very
basic info on the chakras, nutritional information, tips
for relieving backache and performing daily activities
with optimal alignment. The Teasdill book is very
pleasing to the eye, enjoyable and easy to read. I just
love the "Salute to the earth - growing into gravity"
series of poses. This series alone contains some
positions useful during labor and delivery as well as in
preparation for the big day. There is also a page of
positions specifically useful for labor. There are other
visualizations and meditation techniques suggested for
use leading up to and during the birthing process,
general info on the stages of labor and reminders of what
may serve you during each stage. There is also a chapter
on life after birth which includes yoga postures for
recovery as well as general info on breastfeeding,
nutrition, what to expect emotionally. This book does
include a bit of yoga philosophy. The last lines of the
book state, "Yoga is not just a system of stretching
and meditation: yoga is awareness, yoga is living in the
present, yoga is union, synthesis and integrity. Yoga is
life." Preparing for birth requires more than just
physical preparation. A lot of birthing is mental, being
able to stay present for each contraction and rest
between rather than creating more tension and pain in the
body in anticipation of what may come, "complaining
mind." The mindfulness and awareness of body and
mind that come from the meditative aspects of performing
the poses or sitting in meditation are valuable beyond
the physical preparation. If natural birth interests you,
you might want to check out Ina May Gaskin's Guide to
Natural Childbirth. Another good book on prenatal yoga is
Janet Balaskas' Preparing for Birth with Yoga. Wendy
Teasdill's book has a more informal, conversational feel
to it than the Balaskas book, if that is of interest.
Makes is very easy and fun to read!

Reader Review
Prenatal yoga: union with the Goddess,
January 13, 2003
Reviewer: Gabrielle Sedita
from Earlysville, Virginia USA
Prenatal yoga is the perfect companion for a beautiful,
conscious birth. Here is a book for women who embrace the
true meaning of what yoga is: Union with the absolute. It
is not merely a book of postures for improving common
pregnancy discomforts, but a true guide to being a woman
with child, in all that this encompasses: living in our
bodies as in the temple of the Goddess and of the child
to come, embodying the tremendous energy and power that
are ours to reclaim through the initiations of pregnancy
and childbirth. Along with potent asanas preparing women
for the journey of childbirth and becoming aligned and
established in their true selves, are the author's own
odyssey and growth into motherhood.
This is a very personal book, both because Jeannine
Parvati Baker invites us into her sacred space, and
because she constantly invites us to find our own sacred
space through the postures, conscious parenting
decisions, and contemplation. It is a book to treasure
and return to long after pregnancy, simply to steep in
the sancticity of pregnancy. It is one of those gems of
childbirth publications that makes you want to find a
quiet space to relish being woman, and simply being.
In addition, Prenatal Yoga not only is an honest look at
the state of birth in the modern world, but a relief from
those books that anesthesize families into thinking
everything will be just fine if only they choose the
right doctor. Through the examples of Baker's six births,
ranging from doctor assisted to finally a freebirth,
waterbirth, lotus-birth, the book urges women to look
within to find their truth. She narrates how her truth
was to birth ecstatically with the Goddesses and her
partner as sole support. It is a choice she presents as
both accessible and responsible when well-prepared.
Finally, you will enjoy Prenatal Yoga for the quality of
the prose, the vivid poetry, and beautiful photographs of
the author and her growing family. A must-read!

Yoga for Pregnancy, May 5, 2000
Reviewer: Stefanie Delvis
from Nashotah, Wisconsin
As a prenatal yoga instructor I found this book very
helpful in getting ideas for my classes. I love the fact
that there is the symbols in the corner to show which
positions are good for what trimester. This makes it easy
for anyone to regulate which positions should be done. I
would highly recommend this book to anyone who is just
starting out in yoga or who wants to stay fit and
flexible throughout their pregnancy.
