There are not many sources for the westerner who wishes to explore the depths of pranayama. This book is an exhaustive look into the art of breathing. It is complete,it is detailed and technical and it comes from an acknowledged guru.It is more than any other "modern" guru or yoga organization has put out in book form about the subject. For anyone who wishes to investigate and practice pranayama this is the classic.

Excellent for teaching and learning, February 29, 2000
Reviewer: Manoj K Nanda from Berkshire, UK
As an Integral yoga tutor, I would recommend this book as perfect for teaching and learning. It describes class progression in a very simple way, developing sequences and postures as the book progresses into the advanced sections.

It is also a very popular book amongst the students of my beginners and improvers classes - they can directly refer to sections aimed at their ability.

I was very lucky to be given this book as a gift by a friend and would recommend it as an excellent book to introduce and cover the subject of Yoga.

Book Description
People laughed at the image of pretzel-legged yogis focusing on the tip of their noses- until Swami Rama walked into a laboratory and showed scientists what a yogi with control over his respiration can actually do. Before astonished researchers, he demonstrated perfect control over his heart rate and brain waves- control physiologists hadnt believed humans could possibly achieve.

For thousands of years, yogic adepts have claimed that breath is the essential link between body and mind, energizing a subtle body which connects the physical and mental aspects of our being. In this landmark book, Swami Rama and two noted American physicians explore the science of breath as the missing key to both physical health and the attainment of higher states of consciousness. Basic yogic breathing techniques are explained so that we can immediately begin working with this powerful ancient science.

About the Author
Swami Rama founded the Himalayan International Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy, the Himalayan Insititute Hospital Trust in India, and many centers throughout the world. A student of both Himalayan cave monasteries and European universities, he founded the Himalayan Institute to create a bridge between the ancient teachings of the East and modern scientific approaches of the West.

Rudolph Ballentine, M.D., is a respected leader in the field of alternative and complementary medicine. A physician and psychiatrist, he studied medicine in the U.S., psychology in the U.S. and France, and both Ayurveda and homeopathy in India.

Superb Start to Yoga, May 5, 2003
Reviewer: Patrick Nolan from San Jose, CA United States
This book is a potential life changer and will make you rethink the way you think about health. Breath as discussed by Rama and the others is revealed as THE center to all life, our life, Yoga, and to how "happy' we are in both body and mind (i.e., OM). What's great is getting a nice Western emprical discussion of the physiology of breath, and then getting Rama's discussion of breath in the context of Yoga. Another cool part is understanding how important the nose is to breathing and health. A very practical and fascinating book and a great beginning to Yoga.

Review
Great Introduction on Chakras & Breathing, May 21, 1998
Reviewer: Derek (hermes8@backinsf.com) from San Francisco, CA
This is a really neat little booklet explaining the basics not only of Chakra Breathing techniques but of the nature, origin & function of Chakras. The book goes into details of the dis-ease that comes when a Chakra is out of balance, symptoms to look for and describes in detail what a fully functioning Chakra's effects are like.

The tone of the book gives very good information for the reader, never talking down or extending over the reader's head.

The tape that follows the book goes into specific breathing patterns for each of the Chakras. At times I thought the music was a bit too loud and overshadowed the recordings of breath patterns, but overall a good cassette to have.

I have a lot of cassette tapes on this subject & this one was very satisfying.

Oh I should mention that the book when you see it may seem to be rather small but the content makes up for it. Very enjoyable reading!
