10th - 14th February - Week 12 Scroll down to view the most recent update.
We're a little late getting this week started - it rained yesterday (Monday) and it was too mucky for us teacher/photographers to venture out to the site! However, the sun has returned and the site looks great. The foundations are completed and the bricklayers are coming tomorrow, Wednesday. A line has been painted in yellow on top of the concrete to give the 'brickies' a guide.
It was the girls of Fifth Class who got a tour today. They were allowed walk along the foundations and were shown where everything was eventually going to be! Thanks once again to Joe for his help here.
It was the turn of 6th Class girls today, to have a walk around the foundations. They seemed to find it interesting and asked some good questions! Now that the brick layers have arrived, the school is starting to rise. However, the walls you see in the picture on the right will all be below ground level. The large square in the foreground is where the lift will be positioned and for those interested in figures, the foundations go down almost two metres (the 'lean mix' is a metre and a half deep, while the concrete resting on top is 300mm deep). Ground conditions are so poor, they needed this extra depth.
The next piece of demolition was being readied during the week. Yes, Third Class toilets were to come down during half term and the playground was yet to become even smaller as the hoarding was moved to the end of Third Class. The removal of these toilets will give the builders more room on site. It will particularly facilitate trucks coming in and out. At the moment, delivery trucks have to reverse through the entrance as they have no room to turn - this causes all sorts of fun on Kill Lane!
Meanwhile, building is continuing apace. As mentioned earlier, these blocks are only going to floor level. Then hardcore while be settled around them and hammered into place. A slab of concrete will be cast on top and this will be our floor.
