Tuesday, and there's lots of activity on site at present - in and out of the rain showers. In preparation for the pouring of the floor slab (tomorrow, I believe), the damp proof course is being laid. Floor insulation is then placed on top and this is followed by the steel mesh that you may have seen in an earlier photograph.
After all areas of the new school look like the picture on the left, the floor will be poured. When this important stage has been achieved, the brick layers will return and the walls will start to rise - scheduled for just after St. Patrick's Day.
Wednesday dawned and the sun shone! What a glorious day - perfect for the pouring of the floor. This job has to be completed in a single day - even if it means everyone sticking with it until midnight! It should, however, be hard enough to walk on tomorrow.
There was a continuous flow of cement mixers coming and going to and from school all day. The concrete was then pumped from these so fast that each was emptied in little over five minutes.
The cement was then levelled and smoothed with an electronic beam - one of the best inventions of recent years according to Joe and it's easy to see why. It is so much faster than the conventional length of timber, which would take two men a lot longer to complete the same task.
The floor will be finished by this (Wednesday) evening and allowed to dry out completely.
Realistically, the builders will probably return next Wednesday. Bricks have been delivered
and these will be distributed around the site in readiness.
